Through a series of workshops, myths about the Government’s Prevent initiative are dispelled and individuals are empowered with knowledge about Channel, the early intervention that can divert individuals from risk.
Who is it for?
Communities exposed to extremism and specifically community activists and leaders who are a voice of authority within their local area.
What is it?
Through a series of workshops, myths about the Government’s Prevent initiative are dispelled and individuals are empowered with knowledge about Channel, the early intervention that can divert individuals from risk.
What it involves?
Statutory agencies and the local community come together through a series of workshops to discuss Prevent and the Channel early intervention strategy. All learning is reinforced via social media after the workshops.
Topics covered include:
Prevent
• Myths and misconceptions around Prevent are addressed;
• Awareness is raised of the broad range of topics covered under the Prevent agenda;
• Statutory agencies share the principles and interventions underpinning Prevent;
• Simulation of multiagency panel decision making helps individuals to see how the initiative works in practice.
Channel
• Channel is introduced as an early intervention, soft approach to counter extremism;
• The different agencies involved in the Channel process are introduced, so it’s clear it is not dominated by the police or security services;
• The importance of community support and the practicalities of Channel as an anonymous, non-criminal process is underlined.
What it achieves?
Participants who complete the programme are equipped with the knowledge, information and desire to work together as part of Prevent and Channel to intervene early and divert individuals away from risk.
Participants develop:
• Increased awareness of Prevent and Channel;
• Willingness to work together with other agencies to counter extremism;
• Knowledge to inform others of the Prevent and Channel process;
• An ability to encourage community participation in Channel.
